About Cats
The cat has walked alongside humans for thousands of years, from ancient Egypt to modern homes. Above all, it has been both an enigmatic and a close companion—a hunter, a guardian, and a friend. In contemporary Finland, the cat's status is protected by law: animal welfare regulations mandate ensuring its proper nutrition, care, and species-typical needs. This demonstrates that the cat is recognized as a sentient being whose well-being matters to all of us. Feline well-being includes the opportunity to engage in its species-typical behavior, such as observing its environment, hunting, and often the companionship of its own kind.
The cat has also left its paw prints on our language. It is no coincidence that we talk about "lifting the cat's tail" (praising oneself), exclaim "cat take it!" (well, I'll be!), or remind people that "when the cat's away, the mice will play." These idioms capture the cat's nature well—curious and independent.
Thus, the cat's story is more than mere history: it is a part of our culture, our legislation, and our everyday language.
